Lisbon top Best Value European City break

Inspired by Eurovision? Got itchy feet? Lisbon in Portugal now heads the league table of best value weekend European city breaks, according to The Post Office Travel Money Survey. A weekend break for two comes in at £224 excl flights*. The only other cities to come in under £300 were in eastern Europe.

Lisbon's rate of inflation is only 2percent up on last year, outperforming all east and west European cities. Everywhere else hotel prices are over 50percent in 27 cities.

Vilnius in Lithuania came second, Krakow in Poland third, Athens fourth, and Riga, Latvia in fifth position.

Lisbon also offers the cheapest accommodation (at £121) and meals. A three course meal for two with a bottle of house wine costs just over £39. Whereas Amsterdam is the most expensive for accommodation at £525.

When it comes to the most expensive meals Copenhagen tops the list at £150.

But when you get there you might want to scope out the cultural attractions - your best value is in Dublin which costs only £7 to visit the local cultural attractions. Fourth on that list is Cardiff, Wales costing only £14.50 in cultural site visits. Dubrovnik, Croatia comes in highest at £63.22.
